Exams blood from the fetus to detect fetal abnormalities

Periumbilical blood sampling is the aspiration of fetal blood from the umbilical cord, using ultrasound to direct needle aspiration through the maternal abdominal wall; the blood cells are analyzed for chromosome abnormalities, hereditary disorders, and anemia, to name a few. The procedure is similar to an amniocentesis (but not the same).

It is a safe procedure as it is an invasive diagnostic test that has potential risk.

This is common in High Risk Pregnancies.
